it should be noted that this information is useful for "still" artists too.
well, this is an animated tutorial that helps with one small component of the incredibly complex subject of a good punch.
i didn't cover things lke weight distribution, types of punch, good stances, etc...i might get to that eventually, but in the meantime if anyone, still artist or animator, thinks they can add to this tute, or even just provide (personally made) examples of fine punches, they're welcome to email me 450x260 easytoon files of time interval 20, or black and white BMP's of the same size (450x260 pixels). you can make those in MS paint, people...i'll integrate them for you, just number them in the order you want me to show 'em...keep in mind that the framerate is this slow for a reason, it's so everything about the movements is obvious, and because i'm lazy...
(sighs)...lonely NYE for me, this was my party...(cries in corner)...not really happy with a lot of it...i was too tired.
I'm not positive where I heard it but boxers are told that they should be able to pull their arm back as fast as they put it out there, as far as the concept of the punch is concerned.
For your tutorial, it portrays your concept well. And people who haven't had courses in any martial arts will find this useful and or interesting
As for the portrayals of the punches themselves, I would have added 2 to 3 times more frames and slightly quickened the duration from what looks about 15 to 12 or 10, because I understand you don't want it to go too fast so you can see the whole movement of the torso and arm. At the same time the extra frames would make it easier to see what is moving while you are punching.
Ideally I would want to show the fist the whole way through, meaning don't distort it into the speed lines to portray the action, drawing out the fist the whole way through. But at one point I'd probably stretch the fist out. You would also in the process show that hand is twisting while you are punching to add more power, and more impact with a punch. and at a duration of 8 I'd make an attempt to make it last 1 to 2 seconds.
You are the only person to have "Advanced Critique Encouraged" on their deviations, and I think you are better off for it I am looking forward to kicks.
uhm! a bit less lines in the animation would be okay... don't trust me, I'm just envy about the fact that I can't still make animations... hahaha good job! now i know how to punch...
POWER TO THE HIPS! yeah. i actually saw a professional production where it was your example of "bad" and it never looks natural. its kind of like how my friend... he always try to win at a game of mercy but he only concentrates on using his hands and arms. i use my whole body and some weight distru for better balance and more base strength in the arms.

That's a true fact about Punches, when one performs a hit of any kind (punch, kick, grab, etc) usually the whole body tends to move in a way following the limb performning the hit.
This Tutorial is quite useful to point out that important fact with the hips being linked to the punch.

thanks, sly, once again you cut straight to the heart of the matter...yes, the animation in this is lazy, and perhaps i'll clean it up this evening...i agree with you about depicting punches without blurs, but this is easy...and i was lazy...(stares)...
well, do you want to do a short thing on fist-twisting? or fist retreival? i'll stick 'em together.
and adv crit? if i don't say that, all i get is "lolz cool" and "XD"...

In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
